EditTropical Spices
Black pepper, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamom, etc are tropical spices. If you see them labeled as "Virginian", "Maryland" or the like, you can be sure they were not grown around here. That said, spices for the quantity we consume are very compact and do not usually have a significant impact on issues of concern to most locavores.
EditCommonly Available Herbs
Dill, basil, garlic, chives, mint, rosemary are all extremely common and sold at farmers markets. You don't see many farms specializing in spices and herbs.
EditGinger
Ginger is a tropical plant, so don't expect to find it grown in any states surrounding DC. Most ginger root comes from China, India or Nigeria.
Ginger can be grown at home indoors in the summer months.

There is a lavender farm in Virginia. Lavender can be used for non-food products as a fragrance or for lavender cookies.
