EditMilk
The dairy business in Virginia is almost non-existent. Exceptions include cow-shares, which are breathtakingly expensive.
Over the Grass Farm Runs a cow share program. They sell raw-milk, the prices are high, but tolerably high.
My first impression of raw milk came from my microbiology class where I learned about the large number of milk borne diseases. As it turns out, many cheeses are normally made from raw milk. The bacteria that make cheese taste like cheese out compete the bad bacteria. But the bugs are still a threat, which is why you only want to buy raw milk from an old fashioned farm with grass fed (i.e. healthy) cows. It's not safe to buy raw milk from a large scale farm that feeds their cattle grain or has so many cows that they risk sicknesses.
Arganica, which is kind of like a grocery delivery service for local farm products, delivers milk.
Trickling Springs is a Pennsylvania dairy that buys milk from other dairy farmers, mostly milk in a 25-30 mile radius. Arganica is distributing Trickling Spring and Homestead Creamery milk.
J Wen Dairy Farms also sells fresh milk.
The last dairy farm in Loudon specializes in the breeding aspect of the business, not the dairy part. As prices fell, all but the largest producers exited the market, so the closest dairy to DC is Pennsylvania.
