EditIn Season vs Out of Season
In season fruits and vegetables are easy enough to find. Lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. Out of season, if you are finding local produce, it is either stored by the producer (potatoes and onions) or grown in a greenhouse. If you object to the energy usage in transporting tomatoes from Mexico to here in the winter, then it follows that the energy expended on growing hot house tomatoes is just as problematic.
